Slow Mass

At road crossings in Massachusetts there were bulletin boards with maps that served only to tell you how slow your progress was. Massachusetts was more like a roadblock than a meaningful state to traverse.

It was here that I first conceived the idea of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. But now Massachusetts felt like a state I just had to get out of the way so I could get to the biggies up North. I arbitrarily include it as the last of the middle states instead of the first of the northern ones. The last three big ones were in a class by themselves. But Massachusetts isn’t a middle or a northern state. It’s a psychological bog without boards to get you through. The southern states were now a distant memory, the true middle states were also history, and the challenge of the northern three was out ahead. Massachusetts, sorry to say, even underfoot, was nowhere.

We came to a beautiful shade tree where we stopped for lunch. With lots of area between the road and a cornfield, we took the opportunity to dry out gear still soaked from Sages Ravine.

At some point we came to a large rock face overlooking a valley with a view westward to the Catskills in New York State. A handsome, bearded hiker was sitting on the rock, reading. In time he was joined by friends Brew, Dragon, and Danger. Tapeworm and Cake were nearby.

The trail took us down a gradual descent to woods where we would stealth-camp, again with water nearby.
